Dr Wimalaratne is a consultant psychiatrist with specialist qualifications in consultation liaison psychiatry, currently based in Melbourne and working full time across both public and private sectors. She graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka and has completed her specialist training in UK and New Zealand. She is also actively involved in research and academic psychiatry and has previously worked as an honorary senior lecturer at University of Auckland, NZ. Dr Wimalaratne’s curiosity in the mind body interaction has led to her current choices in career pathway. She has extensive clinical experience in fields of both medicine and psychiatry across a number of multicultural settings (Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and New Zealand). Her special interests and expertise include general adult psychiatry, somatoform disorders, psychogeriatrics, early intervention for psychosis, cultural psychiatry and neuropsychiatry. She brings core values of compassion and patient centred care into her practice. The focus of her practice is to provide comprehensive and holistic assessments, formulations and treatment plans for patients while maintaining a high standard of communication and support to non-psychiatric medical practitioners who refer them.
